About Us

what we do

Love in Action is a Christian organisation

Love in Action is a Christian organisation that seeks to demonstrate God’s love in practical ways, by providing support, education and care for orphans and needy families in Uganda, especially those families affected by HIV/AIDS.

We achieve this by identifying and supporting existing community-based initiatives with funding, advice and resources. We also create new projects to respond to unmet community needs.

Our Story

Founded in April 2004 by Alan and Beryl Went

Love in Action was founded in April 2004 by Alan and Beryl Went, from Colchester, UK. They have a home in Masaka, Uganda.

When Alan & Beryl arrived in Masaka in 2003 they first opened an internet cafe, to provide a safe, pornography free environment for people to use. It was at the cafe we met 2 men who had a desire to help the children in their village, Kyetume. As a result of a silver wedding anniversary appeal we were able to build a primary and later a secondary school for them and we started sponsoring children at the schools. Thus Love in Action had it’s beginnings.

We also saw the need to help girls who have dropped out of school through lack of school fees, so the idea of Hosanna House was born as away to help them avoid sugar – daddies.

Later we were asked to develop a primary school in Kasaka, a small village in Bukakata sub-county near Masaka, This has become the main focus of our work. The primary school has been added to with many more classrooms, a secondary school, clinic and farm. See the individual project pages for more information.

In 2015 the internet cafe was closed as mobile internet became widely available and demand dropped.

Official Status

In October 2005 we applied to the Ugandan NGO Board to be formally registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation (Charity) in the Republic of Uganda. This was approved and then renewed in December 2006 / 2009 and again in 2014 & 2018.

In February 2008, Love in Action (International) was formed as a UK Registered Charity (Reg No. 1122493).

Help us build new secondary school classrooms

Our secondary school currently has 4 classrooms and 180 pupils, as we grow we need to add 4 more classrooms as we planned. These rooms will provide a computer suite, art room and space for additional subject teachers.

Each room will cost about £20,000 to build and equip (£30,000 for the computer suite), please help us with this exciting project.
